I recently moved out of Toronto but would like to maintain a number for Toronto contacts to call without cost. I have an Ubuntu host running full time, a Digium TDM400 with 2 FXO/1 FXS modules, and a local POTS phone line, and a full time internet network with static addresses. I am an adaptable guy but a bit lost in all the acronyms, and don't really have the time or desire to become a telephony expert, I just want to get a basic voice mail/redialing system going.
I can work out the Asterisk IVR end, but can someone tell me the simplest way to buy an inexpensive Toronto or toll-free number (DID)?
Thanks!
David

Hi All,
I just signed up for an FreePhoneLine.ca number and have received the account information and phone number.
Now my question is, how does one get it to work with Trixbox. I have looked all over their website on how to configure an ATA device, but it seems they only sell pre configured ATA devices.
Has anyone successfully configured FreePhoneLine.ca to work as a trunk into their Trixbox. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Andrew
You can also try freephoneline.ca to get a Toronto phone number.

that is an interesting link. I'll file it with related VOIP bookmarks. I signed up for service through VBuzzer about a month ago and so far the experience has been good. For $50 per year you can get a Toronto number. No 911 services however this may not be important for you. It is not a big deal for me. I don't know if others here are familiar with Vbuzzer but will be interested to hear/read about other alternatives.
Although Asterisk is not entirely new to me having an Asterisk setup that is connected to the world at large is a new thing for me. I'm always looking to learn more.
Hi David,
If you're looking simply for a non expensive Toronto DID, take a look at www.voicemeup.com
They even have some kind of virtual PBX available directly from your account.
same here but better pricing at http://www.contacttel.com
I’ve got a few DDI numbers from CallCentric all around the world (UK, US, Australia) and couldn’t figure our how to setup an ‘Inbound Route’ in FreePBX that used the number that had been dialled to route the call.
It turns out that you need to extract the number from the ‘SIP header’ information and there’s no setting in FreePBX to do this so it means hacking at the Asterisk config files just a little.
There are a few methods for doing this but these instructions should work for FreePBX/Asterisk -
When setting up your ‘SIP trunk’ in FreePBX under ‘PEER DETAILS’ you want to put the line -
“context=custom-get-did-from-sip”
